Population is a worldwide problem. As I've said before, it is the greatest contributor to pollution there is. To that end, I propose tax breaks for those who don't procreate and an even bigger tax break to those who adopt. It is important to have some positive reinforcement to those who are responsible in regards to population related problems. It is also an issue of fairness as those without children still have their taxdollars go for schools, subsidized daycare, medicaid, etc.
Why is it that there is a child tax credit and yet there is not childless tax credit? Should we not be rewarding those who choose not to have offspring? Now I am aware that a child tax credit doesn't make up for the expense of raising a child. Of course a child is going to cost you more than $1000 dollars a year. It is however, inheritently unfair to those who have been careful not to procreate. Many who don't have children feel a certain amount of resentment that those with children seem to be rewarded and given breaks while they aren't. It makes those who don't have children feel as though they are second class citizens. I believe that those who choose not to have children should be entitled to at least as many tax breaks and tax credits as those who do. Those who adopt instead of breeding their own offspring should be rewarded even more. This will make the tax system more fair in my opinion.
Of course, I am not saying tax dollars shouldn't be going to improve the lives of children. Far from it. Children are among those in society who need the most help. It's easy to say it is the parents' responsibility but even if the parents are irresponsible, you don't want to punish the children. Still, not creating more children is something to be encouraged. It is, dare I say, a virtue not to produce offspring.
Now of course I believe in progressive taxation. Don't mistake my desire to reward those who don't have children as something that is not progressive. I believe the wealthy should pay a larger share of their income in taxes than less well off people. The worker class is the true backbone of the economy. The worker class is the reason why the wealthy can be wealthy. So it is just that the wealthy give back to the worker class. I also am worried about creating powerful dynasties that weild so much influence and power. This is why I am for a very large estate tax. I have a feeling I may get flamed for my support of tax breaks/credits for those without children, but I really feel they are treated as second class citizens in this country not to mention the environmental benefits of curbing population growth.
